I am Nonverbal--I am Intelligent
The Golden Hat Foundation is about giving a voice to those without one. Those with nonverbal autism are often considered “mentally retarded” or “intellectually disabled” due mainly to their lack of communication and difficulty with body awareness.
One of the goals of Golden Hat Foundation is to educate the public about the intellectual capabilities of people with autism and the need for effective communication and academic education.
Andrew, a 14-year-old boy with nonverbal autism is featured in this video, he tells us about what it is like now that he can share his thoughts and how misunderstood he was before he could communicate. Fully mainstreamed in 9th grade high school classes, Andrew gets good grades and will graduate with a regular diploma from his local high school.
The Golden Hat Foundation believes that when given the means to communicate effectively and an academic education, people with autism can truly realize their dreams.
