Slowpoke co-creators Alison Denham and Billy Marchenski talk about their plans to create a site-specific theatre and dance show inspired by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
The name of the show comes from the SLOWPOKE reactor, which is an acronym for Safe Low-Power Kritical Experiment. This is a small type of nuclear reactor developed by Canadian scientists in the 1960's and installed on several universities across the country, mostly for research purposes. The word slowpoke speaks to the aspect of time involved in our complex relationship with this potentially dangerous source of energy, as some forms of radiation take up to 100,00 years to deteriorate.
