Virtual worlds are describing and constructing places and spaces, where one isn´t physically present. Like in allegory of the cave by Plato, the shadows, displayed in front of the eyes, are taken as the true representation of the world. The shadows of the new caves are not anymore caused by the fire like in Plato´s cave, but are displayed as reflexes of electronic impulses of the focusing screens. As for Plato´s cave-man reality can not anymore experienced as a tangible quality, but as a acustical and esspecially optical attraction.
"What is in the picture is existant, what cannot be visualized stays inexistent." (Horst Bredekamp)
