Alexander Galloway writes in his book „The Interface Effect“, that „an interface is not a thing, an interface is always an effect. It is always a process or a translation.“ This effect involves how humans are affected by an interface and the way they are able to enage with a machine. In OFFREAL, two virtual assistants, called Ashley and Allison, are given the abilty to diffract their existence as interface and their looks.
What does it mean to be human and to become human in the digital age? Many people are unable to draw the line between "being online" and "being offline", just as much as it is hard to tell wheater something is "real" (whatever this is) or not. Human-ess and Machines meet somewhere OFF the REAL in a speculative space.
