I made this film about my aunt Patience Abbe, who wrote a best-selling book with her two brothers when she was 11 years old, in 1935. It was made on the fly, using a cell phone and small camera with video, capturing interviews in parking lots, waiting rooms and other informal locations. The potential for capturing valuable social history has expanded exponentially, with tools many of us now carry in our pockets all the time. My hero is Alan Lomax, who took recording devices into prison work fields and onto front porches to save an astounding amount of indigenous music. Communication builds relationships.
