Interview with Hito Steyerl about her work DeriVeD (2008), a multi-media installation at the 7th Shanghai Biennale, 2008.
In her art practice, Hito Steyerl investigates traveling images and media globalization. Researching in Shanghai, she was attracted by the formal appearance of bootlegged films and their “photoshopped” aesthetics. For her installation DeriVeD, created for the 7th Shanghai Biennale, Hito Steyerl focuses on the language used on the DVD covers. As Hito explains in the video, this "new language" - Spamsoc, derived from translation errors, can also be traced among immigrants combining several languages.
