Morning of day 2 of class taught by Brian Schulz of Cape Falcon Kayak at Port Townsend's Wooden Boat Foundation boat shop (Feb 2012). We steamed green white oak rib stock in a plywood box fed by a wall paper steamer, loading 8 ribs at one minute intervals, bending and placing ribs into our kayaks at the same pace. This particular oak that Brian favors reaches its peak flexibility after 8 minutes so maintaining this pace was important. Brian bent our first 3 bow ribs for us because the more severe V shape is more likely to split the wood. This method is done quickly and efficiently without the use of forms or jigs, with basic shape being given by hand before placing and then finishing touches being made by eye while the oak is still pliable.
