Tambacounda: a dusty, rural region of Senegal. Life for its citizens is as harsh as the midday sun. Education is minimal; Aids and Malaria are everywhere. How do you help these people improve their lives?
I traveled to Tambacounda to report on a public-private initiative in action. Mobilize Against Malaria is a five-year programme that is active in certain areas of Ghana, Kenya and Senegal that aims to educate treatment providers and patients about malaria diagnosis and the importance of treatment-adherence.
The programme has been very effective and has reduced deaths from malaria by 50% in Tambacounda, the region in which it operates in the country. However, the initiative highlights the fact that more widespread and sustainable solutions are needed in a continent that loses 3,000 lives each day to a disease that can be easily prevented and treated. - Katie McQue
