For my final in my digital video art class, we were given the assignment of conveying "micro and macro." I decided to look at depression for my topic. I wanted to keep my video fairly minimal. I didn’t want it to be a typical commercial for anti-depressants, or a “the more you know” sort of advertisement. Rather, I wanted to showcase how depression spreads and infects a person. To me, this is micro and macro. Depression can make a person feel so small; it starts off as this budding feeling that is easy to brush off, but after time, the feeling is consuming. It spreads to occupy your entire being. It can be the heaviest feeling in the world—here is where the macro comes into play. Not only is the physical weight of depression overwhelming, it also spreads beyond the individual to inhabit every realm of life. Whether it is friends, family members, or even complete strangers, depression has a surprisingly large scope.
