I first performed Swing'em coinciding with my solo exhibition "Truing" (Jan-Feb 2019) which consisted of performative photographs related to gender/power structures. Swing' em takes a humorous swipe at male-dominated workplace/culture and efforts by women to advance and succeed in that domain. I invited three local artists to participate as conferencees in a fictional "Women's Empowerment Conference" at Simone DeSousa Gallery for the workshop Swing' em. I use women's hosiery, still often seen as expected apparel for women, as a stretchy sack for the two balls each participant is learning to swing. I performed Swing' em at another "Women's Empowerment Conference," this time in Memphis, TN, at Crosstown Arts where I was Artist-In-Residence, July 2019. Three local women agreed to be conferencees for this version of the "Swing'em Workshop" on stage at The Green Room. Both performances were for live audiences, with post-performance audience participation encouraged.
