Marcus Westbury (@unsungsongs) is an Australian urbanist, festival director, TV presenter, writer and broadcaster. He is also instigator and director of Renew Newcastle, an unusual and stunningly successful bottom-up urban renewal project.
It's common to think of cities as hardware, made up of the physical buildings and infrastructure that configure urban space. But sometimes it's more useful to regard the city as a process, as software; constantly being recoded and reinvented as we intervene in it.
