This video shows a whole group lesson I gave a few weeks back (hard to find time to format and upload these things) on how to use text features to help you gain information from a book even if you can't read the whole text. This was a science lesson that I gave prior to a unit where my students were given the opportunity to look through various science books based on plants and their needs. The students were working in small groups, but I knew it would be hard to provide only books on each child's level so I wanted to give them reading strategies that would help them get as much information out of every text as possible - no matter the difficulty level. We had already discussed text features once in a whole group lesson, but in this lesson we focused on headings, captions, and pictures. I have noticed I need to add more opportunities for students to share with one another what they learned from this lesson. Please let me know of any suggestions you have!
