Hip hop is finding a new voice in the mountains of Guatemala.
Local musician Rene Dionisio uses hip hop to promote Maya languages. To spread this message he teaches local children how to rap in their language.
And now he’s teamed up with Casa Ahau founders Dr. Sativo and MCHE, and other artists from the Canal Cultural to start a hip hop school in one of the country’s most impoverished area.
Al Jazeera’s David Mercer spent time with the crew and their students, and learned how this unique blend of old and new is bringing about positive changes.
