Beyond the Human is an adventure nature program that allows you to travel to remote parts of our world to experience life as a different species. Would you like to know how a cricket hears the rainforest? Ascend into the ultrasonic sphere where bats and katydids engage in a sonic struggle of life and death? With acoustic biologist Laurel Symes as your guide, you can!
Our demo shows basic gameplay and functionality, using placeholder sounds and images until we can capture and create custom high quality assets.
First, arrive in the Panamanian rainforest, meet Laurel, and tour the Field Station. Then, explore the wild outdoors, climb trees to plant microphones in the tropical canopy and listen to the sounds you’ve captured at levels accessible to the human ear. From there, enter the bat echolocation experience where Laurel explains how bats use their radar-like abilities to hunt prey. Finally, walk to the pond and listen to the frog chorus, and learn how frogs use sound to find mates and territories.
Future development will include (1) an acoustic station where you can mix and match a variety of soundscapes, including an original music soundtrack, for extended listening experiences as a bat, monkey, katydid and more; and (2) mini games designed to mimic dramatic events as a non-human species. Hunt katydids as a bat using echolocation – or embody a katydid looking for a mate – knowing the bat is out there looking for you.
