"Fly Away" is my short, graduate film animated in charcoal at Sheridan College.
The score consists of original cello music improvised by the talented Ben McEvoy over 5 takes. Any sloppiness in the sound edit is entirely my own doing after an 11th hour crash of our school's (then) new G4s followed by a panicked cobbling-together of a new track in a few desperate hours. Ben is blameless ... but I do wish he could have heard the version that had been meticulously finessed over several days. Sorry Ben.
Ellen Besen was my faculty advisor and deserves loads of credit for supporting my unorthodox (for the programme) approach. A good teacher knows when to ask the important questions (ex.: "What do you want out of this programme?"); a GREAT teacher knows, after you've given a knee-jerk response (ex.: "A job?"), to wait for you to figure out your own right answer.
And EXTRA special thanks to Aldines Zapparoli & practically the whole IT department at Sheridan for the 11th hour, 59th minute save (so late, it couldn't be in the credits) to drag this from the ether in which it was so trapped. I know your best work occurred after I fell asleep on the floor ... it was no less appreciated just because I passed out ... but thanks for revivifying it in time to make the tape for Industry Day.
Over a decade later, I'll forgive it all it's 'takes-itself-too-seriously 'student-ness'". There's tons I'd love to fix but I refuse to do a George Lucas on it.
