I had time while rendering to hop onto my other machine and try something out I was wondering using Red Giant's Particular. Since version 2 is able to accept illumination and shadows from standard lights, I figured why not treat it like an AfterBurn project.
It was a very simple setup. One spotlight located at the birth position and facing the stream direction. Then used a low-res "cloud" image for the texture.
I'm actually surprised at the result. I treated the comp like a typical Fume comp...sharpening, glow, contrast...etc.
