“Atalaya” signifie tour de guet en espagnol. C’est aussi le nom des îles chiliennes où ont été retrouvés en 1998 les débris du bateau de Gerry Roufs, le père navigateur canadien de la cinéaste, disparu en mer. C’est également le mot clef du récit écrit par sa mère, Michèle Cartier, qui retrace la recherche qu’elle entreprendra pour le retrouver. ATALAYA, c’est le pèlerinage de la cinéaste au Cap Horn, archives personnelles et passé en tête, caméra à la main; un essai qui présente ses réflexions sur ce deuil inéluctable, sur la mémoire qui est indéniablement marquée par la présence de l’absence et ainsi, sur la vie qui suit naturellement son cours.

ATALAYA est un essai personnel au sein duquel la cinéaste explore l’état et les lieux liés au deuil de son père navigateur canadien, Gerry Roufs, disparu en mer en 1997 durant le Vendée Globe, une course à la voile, autour du monde, en solitaire, sans escale et sans assistance.

Long synopsis
“Atalaya” means watchtower in Spanish. It’s also the name of the Chilean islands where, in 1998, debris was found from the boat belonging to the Canadian filmmaker’s seafaring father, Gerry Roufs, lost at sea. It’s also a key word of the book written by her mother, Michèle Cartier, which recounts the search she undertook to find him. ATALAYA is the filmmaker's pilgrimage to Cape Horn, camera in hand, memories flowing through her mind; an essay on her reflections on that inescapable grief, on how memory is affected by the presence of absence, and on how life naturally follows its course.
