Shorebirds was filmed at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Tex as all in one afternoon. I was working with some Theremin recordings at the time and realized how the stark flickering of the grasses on the edge of the lake, and the passing birds were of much the same mood. This is likely because I spend a lot of my free time there. White Rock Lake is an important source of my work, as it exists within the bounds of an active city yet retains the stillness of a deep reservoir of life.
The musical composition includes some Virtual Sound Technology filters and keyboard work to accompany the Theremin. Theremin is an electronic instrument developed by Leon Termen in the 1920s, in fact the very first electronic instrument. It is played entirely by hand movements, without touch, and is a direct reflection of the player's entire somatic and psychological experience.
