At the outset, the English Crown ruled over tracts of territory in what is now France. By means of the Hundred Years' War from 1337 to 1453, the French essentially expelled Britain from the Continent. Two of the most famous battles were Cr?cy in 1346 and Agincourt in 1415, the latter immortalised by Shakespeare in Henry V. The war also saw the burning of Joan of Arc. The English won many of the battles, but they finally lost the war.
