The performance imagines a roast: honey-glazed, seductively garnished and incapable of quick get-away. Unself-conscious “preening” devolves into a melodramatic performance for an imaginary audience. In latter excerpts, she becomes the dictatorial force to which she had previously been subjected, and finally victim and tyrant battle it out in choreography inspired by wrestling and the de-boning of a chicken in an instructional food preparation video.
Like so many women of my mother’s generation, the protagonist “makes do”, gives in to self-indulgent fantasy, fights for her life, and occasionally transforms the severe limitations of her circumstance into testaments of power and grace.
