WASTELAND is a snapshot of a reality far from life in the big cities. In Sweden’s inland lies the county of Värmland. According to an influential professor of economics and futurist in Stockholm, Värmland is a place with no shopping, no entertainment, and no universities, offering is nothing of value. He has dismissed Värmland as a typical “wasteland.”
But the young people that live there, what’s rural life to them? Do they see a future? This contemporary document depicts life in the country by offering a glimpse into the world of a few young adults and their life choices. A film that can also be viewed as a political, non-ideological contribution to the debate about the urban-rural divide.
A film by Daniel Milton. Co producer Swedish Television with support from Swedish Film Institute.
