Folk! Finding our roots...in red dancing boots!
Folk! explores the unique underground and acrobatic world of Ukrainian Folk Dancing through the eyes of narrator/filmmaker Roxy Toporowych. Featuring the legendary ballerina and choreographer Roma Pryma-Bohachevsky and the Syzokryli Dance Ensemble of New York, this comedy-docu-drama is relevant to anyone trying to balance ties to one's heritage and culture in a modern world.
A labor of love shot on mini-DV in 2003/2004, Folk! also features the Kashtan Dance Ensemble of Cleveland, Ohio and the Virsky Dance Ensemble of Kyiv, Ukraine with additional performance footage of Voloshky Dance Ensemble of Philadelphia.
With a hilarious commentary by the Dobriansky brothers and archival footage and photos, the film isn't just about dance, but is a time capsule for the Ukrainian-diaspora. The film also features dancers Andrij Cybyk, Orlando Pagan, Stefan Calka as well as Dr. Andriy Nahachewsky, the leading expert on Ukrainian folk dance and the premiere National Artist of Ukraine Myroslav Mychailovych Vantukh, leader of the Virsky Ensemble.
Folk! was part of the East Silver Film Market and Hot Docs Film Market in 2007, along with several film festivals including White Sands, Echo Park and NewFilmmakers Film Festival.
