Hybrid Natural Products: Nature’s Inspiration and Opportunities for Synthetic Chemists

Nature continues to play a very important role in drug discovery program by providing numerous lead compounds in the form of natural products. Inspired by nature, synthetic chemists also can play a very important role in making analogues of natural products in their quest to make new molecular scaffolds based on structural activity relationship studies and mechanism of action. Though there may be many ways to synthesize new molecular scaffolds, one interesting way would be to couple active components of two or more natural products to make hybrid structures. At the outset, it may look like a new concept; nevertheless, nature has made many such hybrid natural products through mixed biosynthesis. From a synthetic point of view, this way of generating new molecular hybrids will provide numerous possibilities and also provide a library of new hybrid molecules. Our group has been actively working on total synthesis of natural products and natural product like molecules, especially hybrid natural products. In this lecture, some of these aspects leading to some unique molecular architecture will be discussed.
