The Importance of Alternative Energy Development for The World Sustainability

Energy stability and economic competitiveness are very important for the sustainable development in the world. The world still strongly depends on fossil fuel as major energy sources. On the other hand the fossil fuel resources is relatively limited and especially for Indonesia there are relatively small resources of fossil fuel, so continuous strong dependency on these fossil fuel will become dangerous in the future. In addition, massive usage of fossil fuel will produce large amount of global warming gas and other problem to the environment.
Therefore development of alternative energy is very important for the World and especially for Indonesia. In this case, development of geothermal, nuclear, solar, wind, bio fuel, biomass, and other alternative energy application must be accelerated and special supports from Governments are necessary.
Up to 2035, the world energy consumption is projected to grow to up of about 50% from that at 2010. However for developing countries the growth is even higher than 75% from that at 2010. Without special breakthrough in environmentally friendly technology it is very difficult to fulfill the World energy demand and at the same time reduce global warming gas emission in the World.
Green house gas free energy resources such as solar energy, hydro energy, geothermal energy, wind energy, nuclear energy, etc. need to be accelerated so that they can have dominant role in the world energy supply. Some breakthrough are important to reduce production cost for solar energy (either thermal or PV), wind energy, and geothermal energy. For nuclear energy the deployment of fourth generation nuclear power plant is very important to ensure that severe accident such as in Chernobyl, TMI II and Fukushima can be avoided while radioactive waste can be burned and non-proliferation usage can be guaranted.
On the other hand development of thermal power plant and gas power plant with significantly higher efficiency and green house gas emission reduction technology are very important to control the world global warming problem. Further effort to accelerate the usage of electric and hydrogen based transportation system is very important to further control green house gas emission.
