Sitting atop a hill, the abandoned Rocchettine castle keeps a watchful eye on the sleepy Italian villa of Rocchette. Rocchette and Rocchettine are situated in what must be one of the most beautiful parts of the Sabina, a deep rocky gorge carved out by the River Laia. The two fortified villages, the first still inhabited and the second recently abandoned, dominate opposite sides of the gorge. Church bells still ring hourly from the quiet town below, as the murmurs of townspeople going about their daily lives quietly echo through the medieval castle walls.
