This video records a lecture offered in conjunction with the exhibition Sam Feinstein: Evolution of a Vision, which ran from September 10 through November 6, 2011, at the Cape Ann Museum. Patricia Stark Feinstein, an artist and teacher who was married to Sam Feinstein (1915-2003) and guest curated the exhibition, first presents a 29-minute documentary that Sam Feinstein made in 1950 about his friend and teacher Hans Hofmann titled Hans Hofmann. The film conveys how Hofmann translates three-dimensional experience into two-dimensional expression that is not meant to imitate the natural world but rather to capture its essence through form, color, line, and rhythm. After the film ends, Patricia Stark Feinstein speaks further about her husband’s relationship with Hofmann as well as Sam Feinstein’s own guiding principles in regards to the creation of art, including a slideshow of his work.
