What is Scleroderma?
Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease characterized by hardening and thickening of the skin. Scleroderma is the third most common autoimmune connective tissue disease (following Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus). It is more common in females than males (4-8:1 female to male). Scleroderma affects all racial groups and all ages.
Christy McCaffrey is the founder of Project Scleroderma. In September of 2009 Christy’s mom, Sandy Selfridge, died at age 58 from an aggressive form of Scleroderma.
After her mom’s passing Christy reached out to patients living with Scleroderma to learn more about the disease. In speaking to these patients, Christy learned that they are desperate to help bring awareness to this cause. She was so touched by their passion and willingness to share their stories and thus was inspired to create Project Scleroderma.
Beneath the Surface:
Project Scleroderma is a grass roots production of a documentary titled “Beneath the Surface”. It is our intention through this documentary to help give these patients a voice, and a platform from which to tell their stories.
There are currently over 300,000 people in the United States living with this disease. We were able to reach out to patients via Twitter and Facebook receiving an overwhelming response from patients in 10 different countries. It is remarkable to us that this many people world wide are living with Scleroderma yet the majority of our population has never heard of the disease.
This film will document Christy’s experience as she travels to meet several patients throughout the U.S. who are currently living with Scleroderma. We will also be sending a small video camera around the world to document the testimonials and stories of patients globally.
We need your support!
In order for this documentary to be possible we need your support. At the moment we are working solely with a passion for a project we know will be impactful, but we cannot continue without sufficient funding.
We sincerely ask that you please consider donating to this cause. By backing this project you will help to share these patients stories and to raise global awareness for Scleroderma Research. Every dollar counts and every donation no matter how small will make a large difference. If you are interested in making a donation please email ProjectScleroderma@gmail.com.
“It is my belief that we can all learn and grow from a common understanding of suffering. If we look closely we can see the beauty that lies just beneath the surface of the painful struggles we all encounter in life.” – Christy McCaffrey
