I was lucky enough to spot this small bird (that I initially thought was a small finch) as it flew into a tree close by to where I was attempting to film Buzzards on Bulbarrow Hill in North Dorset. You can imagine my surprise when I lifted my bin's and realised what it was. I had never actually even seen one before this moment, so, trying not to panic, I turned the camera onto the tree (trying not to disturb the bird into flying off ) and managed a few seconds of footage before it flew away. To say it made my day would be an understatement !!!
The size of a sparrow, this woodpecker is a rare site, because, as well as it's secretive nature, it often frequents the very upper branches of trees, so is difficult to spot.
