Steve McQueen at his petrolhead obsessive best.
After the success of Bullitt, he could pretty much make whatever he wanted - Le Mans is the Result. Naturally, McQueen did most of his own 200+ mph driving and enrolled the services of another 45 or so world class racers - even getting Carroll Shelby to provide the camera cars (well, they were gonna have to keep up with the action).
The production bankrupted McQueen, one driver lost his life, and another (David Piper from the Snake and the Stallion) lost a leg. To cap it all, the original director, John Sturges (of The Great Escape), quit over creative differences with McQueen - who simply wanted to make the ultimate racing movie.
