Under/Current is an innovative mural project led by Franco-Ontarian Graffiti Artist, Mique Michelle, with programming delivered from March through July 2019.
The Under/Current mural is painted on the north side of the sound barrier walls of Finch Avenue West between Islington and Kipling Avenues.
The project aims to weave the voices of community members into a collective story while exploring our connection to the natural landscape, the Humber River, with a focus on resiliency of nature and the local community. With this in mind, we developed the project over the course of community consultation sessions and a series of graffiti art workshops hosted by community organizations in and around North Etobicoke, leading to the production of a 500 sq. ft. outdoor mural.
Workshop participants and Mique Michelle co-created the overall concepts of the Under/Current mural design through group discussions, and a selection of youth and emerging artists were offered a paid opportunity as Community Artist Mentees to work alongside Mique and the Public Art Assistants, Sings to the Forest and Caerina, during mural production week.
Under/Current was realized as a part of Augmented Representations: The North Etobicoke Mural Project, a signature project of the Cultural Hotspot 2019 in partnership with Arts Etobicoke, Mural Routes, and Womxn Paint, with the support of StreetARToronto, Toronto Pearson, and Dulux Canada.
