The purpose of this time-based piece is to promote S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders. The book tells the story of a group of friends in a lower class neighbourhood who get themselves into serious trouble. To mirror the gritty atmosphere of the book’s setting, the footage of this trailer is grainy and features jittering typography. One of the shots focuses on a broken beer bottle against a curb at night, while the other shot depicts a cigarette burning on the pavement. These images are meant to represent the life of the youth in the story. Ambiguous quotes from Hinton’s book are used to spark interest and relate to a teenaged audience, regardless of their social or economical class.
