The USS John Penn sank on 13 August 1943 after unloading a cargo of 155mm munitions at Lunga Point. Gunner took down one of the enemy torpedo planes attacked her, however the plane crashed in to the main mast, just as a torpedo struck the ship.
She sank stern first in 58m of water, coming to rest on her starboard side.
