The aspiration to build a new Indonesia under the lead of Soekarno caused the delegation of some citizens to Europe as students, artists, and journalists to absorb new knowledge and gather experiences. During those achievements, the “September 30th” movement (G30S) caused big influences to those who were abroad. The repression from the Orde Baru regime to those who considered leftist and communistic was done through screenings and withdrawals of passports. A few of these citizens chose not to come back to Indonesia, because the scale of the consequences, such as arrests and forceful abductions. To survive through these tragedies, they opened a restaurant as a symbol of solidarity among exiles. Restoran Indonesia in Paris, became part of emancipation movement by Indonesians who cared about human-rights issues among other immigrants. Restoran Indonesia was boycottted by Soeharto’s regime, the inconsiderate label of the ‘red’ restaurant never dettered their spirit to be a monument of human-rights struggles.
