It is always in times of crises that people are looking for a man with a strong hand to save the world. When Hitler took power in Germany, even many Christians thought he would fulfill their hopes. Nobody took a stand when the poison of anti-Semitism started spreading slowly at first, but then struck with deadly power. When the synagogues went up in flames, nobody went out on the streets to stand up to the daunting mob.
I am convinced there has never been a more crucial moment to take a stand against anti-Semitism and to stand by Israel publicly than now. In Germany we have seen the March of Life change our land. What would happen, if tens of thousands were to come together in the major cities on Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 21, both from Christian and Jewish congregations, to take to the streets together to march a public declaration, a "March of Life", to break the veil of silence?
Numerous friends from America have come to Germany to stand with us on the March of Life. It is my privilege to support the Holocaust Memorial March at this hour, to be part of it and to proclaim together with a powerful voice to both the visible and the invisible world: Never again!
