THIS VERSION IS THE FILM PLUS PERFORMACE OF THE SCORE. Asphalt Serenade performed their original film and score "Elegy Highway" live at the famous Music Box Village in New Orleans, La. on November 11, 2017. The film was edited live by Carlos Grasso in conjunction with the performed score, and is in keeping with Asphalt Serenade's mission to make narrative film a performance experience. Ten musicians, including Pixies drummer David Lovering and local cello legend Helen Gillet, performed the score written by James Slay and Carlos Grasso. Improvisational pieces were composed by the orchestra and Helen Gillet. The musical houses which make up the Music Box Village were also played as augmentation to the primary orchestra and traditional instruments.
An American fever dream road trip, the quasi-autobiographical film tells the story of a boy scout on his way to Washington, D.C. aboard a Greyhound bus and the America he sees through the windows across time. The film uses found and original footage and sound with an original soundtrack. The original source film "Freedom Highway" stars "Old Yeller" Disney child actor Tommy Kirk as the boy scout, and which also includes an early, if not the first, film performance by Hollywood legend Angie Dickinson.
