Claressa Shields is a teenager from Flint, Michigan competing for a chance to box at the 2012 Olympics in London. This year's PAL Championships (in Toledo, Ohio) were the final qualifying event for women's boxing; those who won got a chance to compete for a spot on the 2012 Olympic team. This is the first year that women's boxing is an Olympic sport.
I've had the footage for a few months, the audio is from recent Radio Diary, "Teen Contender."
More stories on Claressa, and other women boxers, are available at wnyc.org/series/women-box-fighting-make-history/. More work by Sue Jay Johnson (who produced the Radio Diary episode and "Women Box") is available at nytimes.com/interactive/2012/01/29/magazine/boxing-women.html#index.
