A celebration of world water day, 2012. Several things had to come together to get this shot. First, I used a pipette to create the drop, while at the same time with the other hand I pulled on the plastic sheet in the background. The plastic sheet was backlit and I drew a repeating map of the world on it. I oriented the map backwards and pulled it to the left (from the viewer's perspective) so that in the drop of water, the continents would refract and appear to be oriented and move in the proper direction. I also colored the continents yellow so that they would appear green inside the drop of blue water. My colleague helped by triggering the camera just as the drop fell. It took about 12 tries to get the timing right.
