The annual Thaipusam Hindu Festival in Penang is an astonishing event to witness. Hindus create enormous, colorful kavadi or burdens for devotees to carry several kilometers to Murugan's temple. Devotees submit to mass body piercings, even having large skewers driven through their cheeks & the tip of their tongues. Then they carry these kavadi trough streets filled people celebrating & dancing. I had opportunity to become embedded with Penang's ace kavadi builders for three days as they created this year's most outstanding kavadi, & then I closely followed one of their devotee friends as he carried his kavadi over 7 kilometers to Penang's waterfall temple.
