The book trailer was created from a project in our junior graphic design 'Collaboration' class. For this project, students are given the option of select client projects that have generated from the local community in Doha and VCUQatar. For this particular project, three students selected Patty Paine, a Professor at VCUQatar, as their client. Patty's project was part of a larger research project that resulted in a collection of poetry from the gulf region. The book' "Gathering the Tide" had been published and Patty was preparing for a book launch, poetry conference and book signing event. She needed promotional materials for the launch, which included a book trailer that could play at the online and at the launch conference.
The students had only three weeks to complete the project from start to finish. After meeting with Patty, they developed the scope of the project, which included project planning, shot planning and a process. As part of their process, they each decided to randomly find lines of text from various poems in the book. The students then used those lines of text to spark visual ideas and then found locations to shoot footage around Qatar. In the end, the book trailer becomes 'visual poetry' while relating specifically to subject matter found in the anthology.
All footage is original and shot by the students and the sound track is an original score created by one of the students in the group.
