Eighteen months ago Brooke and Stephen Haas’ lives changed with the birth of their first child. Everything about Zaya’s birth was a family affair.
“I attended all the appointments at Zoe’s office and was there for the whole delivery,” says Stephen.
Zoe Sheppard is a certified nurse midwife.
“I had heard friends talk about it and told me all of the great things about it. So I wanted to give it a shot myself,” says Brooke.
“We are RNs who received a master’s degree in nursing, completed a nurse midwifery course. Afterwards you’re qualified to take care of women not only for their gynecological needs but we take care of them during pregnancy and deliver their babies,” says Zoe Sheppard, a certified nurse midwife with Lee Memorial Health System.
Many women approach their pregnancy wanting to savor the experience, the entire experience, right down to the delivery, and they’re looking for someone who has time to share with them.
“Doctors are very knowledgeable but their time is very valuable. Sometimes when we feel ‘I’ve got 60 seconds to tell the doctor everything, every word has to count’ and I think Zoe really gave us a lot of time and attention,” says Stephen.
“Historically midwives have been known to take care of indigent populations in clinic type settings. However within the last 20 years midwifery has really grown and the educated parents who want to have more of a role and more of a say in their care often will seek a nurse midwife,” says Sheppard.
Baby Zaya was born in a hospital with no complications. Her special delivery was everything her parents hoped and planned for.
“There are so many more options now and you have that choice,” says Brooke.
