In January, before everything was on lockdown, our team traveled to Brownsville, Texas, and Matamoros, Tamaulipas, to start work filming the sequel to Witness at Tornillo. It was a profound experience for our team to film the dire human rights abuses caused in large part by the federal protocol known as MPP, or Remain in Mexico. It was not all woe, though. We had the immeasurable satisfaction of documenting and interviewing some genuinely heroic people. These are private citizens who, when faced every day with grave injustice in the borderlands they call home, stepped up to provide the necessary elements of life to sustain their most desperate neighbors.
We want to thank the following organizations not only for appearing in our film but for the miraculous work they perform every single day:
Angry Tias and Abeulas of the Rio Grande Valley
The Sidewalk School
The Asylum Seeker Network of Support / Resource Center Matamoros
We encourage you to support the inspirational works of these organizations. Keep in mind some of their needs may have changed since the start of the pandemic, so “Like” their pages and ask how to best support them in these extra trying times.
