Using information gathered in various workshops and settings, Lucy VanderKamp hopes to help participants better understand themselves so that they can contribute to a healthy work environment. Topics include Emotional Intelligence, soliciting and providing constructive feedback, understanding different communication styles, active listening, and how to be your whole self at work.
Lucy VanderKamp is the Stacks Manager at the Special Collection Library at Duke University - the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library - overseeing physical storage (18,000 square feet!) and circulation (averaging 1,400 items per month!). Lucy’s library work is informed by a prior career as a music teacher in Chicago and as a manager in a bakery at a high-end grocery store. Staff at Duke University Libraries are encouraged to explore communication, inclusion, and self-understanding and this has allowed Lucy to meld lessons from library resources and colleagues and those learned as a teacher and manager to help inform her work processes and communicate with the people around her, whether they be the students she supervises, researchers utilizing the library, colleagues across departments and divisions, or close co-workers and supervisors.
