CITY GATE is a video documentary commissioned by AP (Architecture Project), which shows, in the form of a subjective essay-film, the sequential demolition of the City Gate of Valletta prior to its new construction.
The film is the product of entire days spent, during several weeks in May 2011, in and around the site, observing and filming. I filmed falling stones, dust, workers, concrete, onlookers, pigeons, machines, tourists, and loads and loads of rubble. It was a slow process. Taking the gate apart was not as obvious as it seemed at the onset.
After some days, the demolition machines had in my eyes mutated into humanoid monsters, working their way through layers of construction of former times, making space for a new construction, maybe even a new vision which was best epitomized by the city’s pigeons: having lost their sleeping convention in the gate, the birds became homeless fragments of moving history.
