As World Malaria Day approaches on April 25, MSF has witnessed a surge of patients with malaria in the Democratic Republic of Congo which is overwhelming the capacity of MSF & others to respond.
While the causes of the increase remain uncertain, the crisis is unfolding in the context of a health system sorely lacking resources at all levels. The country lacks adequate medicines, medical supplies, and sufficient numbers of trained medical personnel. Malaria prevention and management systems are deficient.
A comprehensive and stepped-up approach is needed immediately to address the needs of all patients requiring care.
