Paper Tones is a commissioned sound art piece, a composition for the small wooden building in which paper used to be stored and put on display. The design of this building is directly related to its function and the characteristics of paper. The sound composition is also based on these characteristics and thus relates to the properties of the small building, its former function and history and empowers these by adding an auditive layer. The visitor plays a role in the perception of the composition by moving through the field of soundwaves: their position in the building results in a shifting experience of resonance.
The composition is constructed out of sine waves which are derived from the characteristics of the paper: the different sizes, weights, etc. The properties of the paper provide the framework of the composition, such as the frequency and duration of the tones.
