A recent trip to Long Caye (Slickrock Adventures - slickrock.com/) prompted the purchase of a new underwater camera - the Nikon COOLPIX AW100. This video represents a sample of the quality captured above and below the water. The water was a very pleasant 82 degrees!
Long Caye is an island 40 miles off the coast of Belize and is located in the Belize Barrier Reef. This reef is the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere and is approximately 185 miles long (300 kilometers). The reef extends from the border of Mexico in the north, to near the Guatemalan border in the south. The Belize Barrier Reef is home to a large diversity of plants and animals and is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. It is comprised of 70 hard coral species, 36 soft coral species, 500 species of fish, and hundreds of invertebrate species. A large portion of the reef is protected by the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. The Reserve System was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
