These commercials for Forbes Regional & Allegheny Valley Hospitals weres primarily shot on the Canon 5D Mk3 with the latest Marvels 3.4 picture style. An ISO of 640 was set for all scenes. Lenses included Canon 24mm F1.4L, 35mm F1.4L, 24-70mm F2.8L, and 70-200mm F2.8L. Some of the "B-Roll" cutaways were shot on the Panasonic AF-100 & GH2.
Many scenes were shot with available light as we were inside busy, working areas of the hospital. Otherwise we supplemented available light with soft, LED plexiglas panels. HMI's were the primary light source in the hospital lobby area where the featured on-camera doctor was photographed.
All footage was converted to ProRes422HQ using the excellent Rarevision 5D to RGB batch converter. It's slower than other converters but it does an excellent job with the 709 color matrix which is "punchier" than the previous 601 color encoding. (Make sure you set the converter menu to 709 "Full Range", not "Broadcast Levels".) I think the extra conversion time is well worth it.
Editing was done in Final Cut Pro 7. I used the standard FCP sharpening filter with a setting of 18% on each clip. Color correction was with "Colorista 2" followed by the "Broadcast Safe" filter. A slight amount of soft vignetting was added to tone down the edges of some shots. Very little color correction was used, however if I had it to do again, I'd do a separate in-camera white balance in each shooting area. This is especially important under uncontrolled overhead florescent lighting.
Please note that the helicopter landing scene was previously shot on a Sony F900R. The slow-motion emergency room action was shot on a Panasonic AF100 at 60fps.
