John Healy escaped a life among the street muggers and winos of '60s London to become a chess champion and an award-winning author, but he was defenceless against the intrigues of the literary establishment. Barbaric Genius tells the story of how his book, The Grass Arena, became unobtainable and Healy's career was stopped in its tracks for twenty years because of one mysterious phone call.
Barbaric Genius opens May 25 at Odeon Panton St, London, and Irish Film Institute, Dublin, and then tours.
