The Sandhill Crane family that nested on Inspiration Ridge Preserve in Homer, Alaska returned from the Sacramento Valley in California with their colt in tow. They were on the ground only 15 minutes before the adults ostracized the colt and then took off for their nest site. The poor colt got the "boot" quicker than we expected. He flew off to the north toward the roost he used with his parents last summer.
The parents are waiting for the heavy snow pack to melt and free up the pond where their nest is located. Meanwhile, the male was trying to woo his partner with his fancy dancing, but she did not seem interested at all.
