Pearl Butcher took up dragon boating after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She found it was a great way to maintain an active and healthy social life during her ordeal.
Living in Orange in central west NSW, she started the Colour City Dragon Boat Club with other breast cancer survivors. The club now has more than 50 members who train on nearby Lake Canobolas and regularly compete in local regattas.
She enjoys rowing, sweeping (steering the boat) and drumming to keep the rowers in time, but most of all she loves the role of coaching the team and motivating them to put in that little bit of extra effort.
Pearl is also involved with Dragons Abreast, an organisation that raises awareness of breast cancer through dragon boating.
